The type and scale of benefits generated by a project will vary depending on the local conditions (e.g. country, activity, local socio-economic status). This KPI should be measured following a stepwise process as follows:

Identify the potential benefits generated by the project. These may be economic, including the provision of funding, jobs, access to markets etc. Benefits may also be social, including increased access to healthcare, education, equality (e.g. increased participation of marginalized groups).
Calculate the number of people within local communities reporting benefits related to each of the positive livelihoods impacts of the project (as identified in step 1). This can be conducted via surveys within local communities engaged within the project.
Sum the number of people benefitting from one or more of the projects livelihoods impact to be reported for LIV 03.
Under the headline LIV 03, disaggregated reporting to the appropriate level can be provided. For example, reporting the number of people benefiting from each individual positive impact (note that the number reported benefiting when disaggregated by impact may be larger than the value reported for LIV 02 which does not account for the same people benefiting from multiple impacts e.g. Benefits from job creation and access to education). Further disaggregation may be relevant under certain circumstances, for example, disaggregation by gender, indigenous groups etc.
